STPM Biology Structure of Cell and Organelle (Part 3)

Structure of Eukaryotic Cells as Seen under Electron Microscope

The maximum magnification of a light microscope is 1500X. Hence organelles like ribosomes, lysosomes and microtubules cannot be observed. Electron microscope can magnify specimens until 500,000X. Even the smallest organelle is visible!!

All plant and animal cells are bounded by a plasma membrane. The two main components of eukaryotic cell are cytoplasm and nucleus. Together, cytoplasm and nucleus is referred to as protoplasm.

Embedded in the cytoplasm are membrane enclosed organelles. Among the organelles are mitochondria, ribosomes, Golgi apparatus, lysosomes, chloroplasts (plant cells only), centrioles, and endoplasmic reticulum.
